Salt River Engagement Session | Timeless Romance on 35mm Film in Tonto National Forest

There is a distinct kind of magic that happens when you take a couple out into the rugged beauty of the Arizona desert, hand them a sense of adventure, and document the entire thing strictly on analog film. No digital safety nets—just the intentional, soulful rhythm of capturing real love, frame by frame.

Recently, I had the absolute pleasure of meeting up with an incredible couple Tessa & Tyler for their engagement photos near the Salt River. Tonto National Forest is always a spectacular backdrop, but when you get down right against the water as the sun begins to dip, it transforms into something entirely otherworldly.

Chasing the Sun Along the Salt River

If you’ve been searching for the perfect spot for desert portraits with a twist, the Salt River is hard to beat. You get the iconic, towering saguaros and dramatic canyon walls that make the East Valley so special, juxtaposed against the cool, rushing waters of the river.

We timed this session perfectly to catch the final hours of daylight. We wandered along the riverbanks, finding those quiet pockets where the water slows down and reflects the changing colors of the sky. There’s an effortless romance to this location for couple sessions—it forces you to slow down, take in the scenery, and just enjoy being in the moment together.

35mm Film for Lovers: Kodak 200 and Portra 400

For this session, we left the digital gear mostly behind and shot almost entirely on 35mm film, splitting the afternoon between Kodak Gold 200 and Kodak Portra 400.

If you’ve ever wondered why a photographer would choose to shoot a session exclusively on analog, it all comes down to the feeling. Film captures a depth, a texture, and an authentic color palette that digital sensors are constantly trying to emulate.

  1. Kodak 200: We started the afternoon with this classic stock. It loves the bright, crisp Arizona sun, bringing out rich contrast, vibrant warm tones, and a beautiful, nostalgic look that perfectly complemented the desert landscape.
  2. Portra 400: As the sun began to slip behind the cliffs and we entered that coveted golden hour, I switched over to Portra 400. Known for its legendary, creamy skin tones and incredible ability to handle highlights, Portra captured the soft, amber glow filtering through the mesquite trees with absolute perfection. It handles the transition into twilight like a dream, preserving the soft, pastel hues of the blue hour.

Planning Your Salt River Engagement Photo Session?

Whether you want to hike deep into the Tonto National Forest, hunt for a glimpse of the wild horses, or simply splash around the edges of the Salt River at sunset, I’d love to help you tell your story. Together, we can map out the perfect light, choose the right film stocks for your vibe, and create images that feel uniquely, authentically you.

Let's talk about your vision!

  • What is the best time of year for a Salt River engagement session?

While the river is beautiful year-round, late autumn through early spring offers the most comfortable weather for exploring the trails around Tonto National Forest. If you're looking for that classic desert warmth without the intense summer heat, October through April is absolute perfection. We shot this session in late June though so it's definitly possible if you're willing to brave the heat a little big and near the river is much cooler!

  • Do we need a pass to shoot in the Tonto National Forest?

Yes, a Tonto Daily Pass or an America the Beautiful interagency pass is required to park at the recreation sites along the Salt River. Don't worry about the logistics, though—I'll help you coordinate exactly where to meet and make sure we have all our bases covered before we start shooting!

  • Why should we consider shooting our engagement photos on 35mm film?

Film forces everyone to slow down and be present. Because there’s no screen to look at after every click, you get to stay entirely locked into each other instead of worrying about how the photos look in real-time. The result is a gallery full of genuine, organic moments, wrapped in a classic, artistic aesthetic with timeless grain and colors that never go out of style.

  • Can we expect to see the Salt River wild horses during our shoot?

While they are wild animals and roam freely across the forest, we do frequently catch glimpses of them cooling off in the river, especially during the quieter hours close to sunset. If seeing the horses is a priority for your session, we can plan our locations around their favorite watering holes!
