Gilbert Maternity Session | Golden Hour at Robin Park on 35mm Film & Digital

There is something incredibly grounding about a maternity session. It’s this brief, beautiful chapter where everything is about anticipation, quiet moments, and the calm before life changes in the best way possible.

Recently, I got to spend a perfect Arizona evening documenting a sweet couple for their maternity photos in

Gilbert. We met up at Robin Park right as the sun started its descent, and the East Valley absolutely showed out for all of us.

Golden Hour at Robin Park

If you’ve never been, Robin Park is one of those local Gilbert spots that just works beautifully for portraits. It gives you a great mix of open green space, mature trees, and soft paths that catch the light perfectly.

We timed the session exactly for golden hour—that sweet spot about forty-five minutes before the sun dips below the horizon. The light here filters through the trees and creates this warm, amber glow that feels almost painted on. For a maternity shoot, that soft, flattering light is exactly what you want. It feels effortless, organic, and completely focused on the connection between the two of them.

The Best of Both Worlds: Digital & 35mm Film

For this session, we did a true hybrid mix—shooting about half the time on digital and half on 35mm film.

I love working this way because it gives you the absolute best of both mediums. Digital is incredible for its precision, speed, and reliability. It lets us move quickly, catch those fleeting, candid laughs, and ensure we have every essential shot locked in.

But when you slow down and pick up a film camera? That's where the real soul of a session happens.

There is a distinct, nostalgic depth to analog film that digital just can't quite replicate. The way film handles the bright, fiery tones of an Arizona sunset is pure magic. It softens the highlights, adds a beautiful, organic grain, and captures the true emotion of the moment in a way that feels incredibly timeless. When you're documenting a milestone as major as welcoming a new baby, having those images preserved with the raw, authentic character of film feels entirely right.

We chased the last rays of light until the sun completely vanished, leaving behind that dreamy, blue-hour twilight. It was relaxed, fun, and exactly what a maternity session should be.

Planning Your Gilbert Photo Session?

Whether you're celebrating a new addition to the family, an engagement, or just want to capture a specific chapter of your story, I'd love to help you bring it to life. We can find the perfect local backdrop, map out the best light, and blend digital and analog film to create images you'll look back on for decades.

Let's talk about your vision!

  • What is the best time of day for a Gilbert maternity session?

Golden hour - the hour right before sunset - is hands-down the best time. The Arizona sun can be incredibly harsh, but during golden hour, the light turns soft, warm, and golden. It filters beautifully through the trees at Robin Park and wraps you in a super flattering, organic glow.

  • Why do you shoot a mix of digital and 35mm film?

It truly gives you the best of both worlds. Digital is fast, sharp, and reliable, which is great for catching quick, candid laughs and making sure we get all the must-have shots. Film, on the other hand, slows things down. It has a soulful, nostalgic quality, handles the bright Arizona sunset tones like nothing else, and adds a beautiful, timeless grain that makes your photos feel like art.

  • When should I schedule my maternity photos?

The sweet spot is usually between 28 and 34 weeks. Ideally you still want to be feeling comfortable enough to move around, walk the trails, and enjoy the session without feeling totally wiped out. But whever you are at, I'm here to work with you to take beautiful pictures. Even if that's finding somewhere 30 seconds from where we can park!

  • Can my partner and older kids be in the photos too?

Absolutely! While the primary focus is on you and your newest addition, celebrating this chapter as a couple or a growing family is a huge part of the story. We’ll make sure to get a great mix of portraits of everyone.
