Desert Gold: A Timeless Phoenix Family Photo Session on 35mm Film

Plan Your Next Family Photos near Saguaro Lake

There is an intentionality that comes with shooting film that digital simply cannot replicate. When you’re out in the rugged beauty of the Tonto National Forest, surrounded by towering saguaros and the quiet rush of the Salt River, you want to capture the feeling of the afternoon—not just the data.

For a recent Phoenix family photo session, we headed into the heart of the desert with a young family of three. My goal was to document the unscripted joy of a toddler exploring the wild, framed by the classic warmth of analog photography. I decided to challenge myself by capturing the essence of their story on just half a roll of Kodak Portra 400 through my Leica M6.

The Art of the "Slow" Family Session

As a Phoenix family photographer, I often find that the best moments happen in the pauses between "poses." This is where the Leica M6 shines. It’s quiet, unobtrusive, and forces a slower pace.

With only about 18 frames to work with for the film portion of our shoot, every shutter click was earned. We watched as mom and dad chased their toddler through the brush, the low Arizona sun catching the dust kicked up by tiny feet. By choosing film, I wasn't just taking photos; I was waiting for the light to hit a smile or a candid embrace in a way that felt permanent.

Why Portra 400 is the Secret to Arizona Desert Tones

If you’ve spent any time in the Tonto National Forest, you know the colors are specific: dusty sage, copper-toned earth, and a sky that turns a soft pastel during golden hour.

Kodak Portra 400 is arguably the best film stock for the Arizona landscape because of its:

Warmth: It naturally leans into the golden tones of the desert.

Skin Tones: It renders skin beautifully, even in the high-contrast lighting of the Southwest.

Latitude: It handles the bright highlights of a Phoenix sunset without losing the detail in the shadows.

The result is a gallery that feels like a memory—slightly grainy, deeply textured, and completely timeless.

Creating Memories in the Tonto National Forest

Choosing a location like the Tonto National Forest for your Phoenix family photo session offers a sense of adventure that a city park just can't match. Whether we are near Saguaro Lake or trekking through the mesquite groves, the backdrop is as powerful as the connection between the people in the frame.

For this family, the session wasn't about looking perfect; it was about being present. And that is exactly what 35mm film captures best.

Phoenix Family Photography FAQ

  • Where are the best locations for a Phoenix family photo session?

While I love the urban vibes of downtown, nothing beats the natural desert. The Tonto National Forest (near Saguaro Lake), the San Tan Regional Park in Queen Creek, and the Riparian Preserve in Gilbert are top-tier choices for that iconic Arizona glow.

  • Do you offer 35mm film for all your family sessions?

Yes! I love incorporating analog photography into my work. Whether it’s a full roll or a hybrid session where I shoot both digital and film, I believe the color, grain, and texture of 35mm film add a unique, nostalgic layer to your family’s story.

  • What should we wear for a desert family shoot?

Think earth tones and textures. Neutrals like cream, rust, olive, and mustard look incredible against the desert palette. Avoid heavy patterns so the focus stays on your family’s faces and the beautiful scenery.

  • When is the best time to book a Phoenix family photographer?

Golden hour—the hour before sunset—is the "magic" time. In Arizona, this is especially important to avoid the harsh midday sun. I recommend booking at least 4–6 weeks in advance, especially during the busy fall and spring seasons.

  • How do we handle a toddler who might not want to sit still?

That’s actually my favorite kind of session! My approach is "lifestyle-first," meaning we follow the toddler’s lead. We play, we explore, and we capture the movement. Some of the best photos on my Leica M6 are the ones where a child is simply being themselves in the wild.
