Intimate Buckeye Elopement: A Historic Church Ceremony and Backyard Celebration

There is something deeply grounding about an elopement that strips away the noise and focuses entirely on what matters most: two people committing their lives to each other, surrounded by the people they love. Recently, I had the incredible honor of documenting a stunning, intimate elopement out in Buckeye, Arizona.

From a quiet, sacred ceremony at the local historic Catholic church to a warm, joy-filled backyard reception just down the road, every single frame of this day felt honest, intimate, and profoundly special.

Sacred Beginnings: The Buckeye Catholic Church Ceremony

The day began with a quiet sense of reverence at a local Catholic church in the heart of Buckeye. Stepping inside the historic architecture offered a peaceful sanctuary away from the desert heat. The soft light filtering through the windows cast a gentle glow on the couple as they exchanged traditional vows.

Shifting to Celebration: An Intimate Backyard Reception

After the ceremony, the celebration moved just down the road to a close friend's nearby home. Trading formal pews for a relaxed backyard setting, the atmosphere instantly shifted into a warm, celebratory gathering.

Guests mingled under the Arizona sky, sharing laughs, good food, and heartfelt toasts. There was an effortless, cozy charm to the evening—children running around, drinks clinking, and the couple truly getting to spend quality time with every single person in attendance. It’s these unscripted, genuine moments of connection that make backyard receptions so uniquely magical to photograph.

The Hybrid Approach: 50/50 35mm Film and Digital Photography

For this celebration, we took a hybrid storytelling approach, shooting 50% on digital and 50% on 35mm film.

The dual-medium approach brings out the best of both worlds. The digital captures ensure crisp clarity in shifting lighting conditions, while the analog film stock introduces a warm, nostalgic grain and rich organic tones. There is an unmistakable texture to film that mirrors the timeless nature of a wedding day—preserving the desert light, the authentic skin tones, and the vintage feel of the historic church in a way that feels like looking straight into a memory.

  • Why choose an intimate elopement over a traditional large wedding?

Elopements allow you to bypass the stress of a massive guest list and timeline constraints. They keep the focus entirely on your relationship, giving you more freedom to design a day that feels authentic to you.

  • Why incorporate 35mm film into a wedding or elopement gallery?

Film photography brings a tangible, timeless emotion to your photos. The natural grain and color depth create an artistic archive that feels remarkably personal and enduring.

  • How do you help keep elopement photography feeling natural and unposed?

My approach focuses on documentary-style storytelling rather than rigid posing. By hanging back, letting moments unfold organically, and keeping the timeline unhurried, I capture true candid emotions—from quiet glances at the altar to the laughter shared around a backyard table.
